Why annual bills catch people out

Most people budget around their monthly direct debits — rent, council tax, energy, phone. But the bills that cause the most stress are the ones that land once or twice a year: car insurance, home insurance, MOT, boiler servicing, Christmas, and school costs.

These bills are easy to forget about until the renewal letter arrives. By then, you either scramble to find the money, dip into savings, or put it on a credit card. None of those feel good.

The fix is simple: work out the total, divide by 52, and set that amount aside every week into a separate pot or savings account. When the bill arrives, the money is already waiting.

A worked example

Here is a typical UK household's annual bills:

BillAnnual cost
Car insurance£480
Home insurance£320
TV licence£169.50
Car MOT & service£350
Boiler service£90
Christmas & birthdays£600
Holiday fund£800
Pet insurance£240
Total£3,049.50

£3,049.50 ÷ 52 = £58.64 per week. That's roughly £8.38 per day — about the price of a meal deal and a coffee. Totally manageable when you plan for it.
