Work out your spending plan

GBP £

Use money you have today. This works whether your wages stay the same or change each payday.

1. Your balance & next payday
2. Your regular payments

Add rent, direct debits and subscriptions, including payments due today. Leave out any occurrence already paid.

No payments added. Add any regular bills before relying on the estimate.

How the safe-to-spend calculation works

Start with your current spending-account balance. Subtract unpaid bills due from today through payday, groceries and transport for the days remaining, a contribution towards later bills and any safety buffer. If the result is negative, the spending estimate is zero and the shortfall is shown separately.

The weekly and daily guides divide that same remaining amount across the time left. They are pacing guides, not extra allowances to add together. With fewer than seven days to payday, the weekly card is capped to the remaining days.

Worked example: 14 days to payday

With £1,500 in your spending account, £600 in unpaid bills through payday and £70 per week for essentials, £760 remains if there are no other reservations. That gives a £380 weekly guide or £54.28 a day, rounded down.

Add a £50 buffer and the total becomes £710. If you have a bill due after the next payday, the calculator may also reserve a contribution towards it. Your own bill dates and pay interval determine that contribution.

What to include in your balance and payments

Use money already in your spending account, including wages already received. Exclude future wages, separate savings and separate bills pots. Add unpaid rent, council tax, utilities, insurance payments, phone contracts and subscriptions. Include payments due today or on payday because they may leave before wages arrive.

An occurrence already paid should be left out when it is already reflected in your balance. Enter groceries and travel in the essentials field rather than adding the same costs twice. This public calculator does not offset a separate bills-pot balance; the saved app has that additional setting.

Questions about your result

Does it work with changing wages?

Yes. Your current balance and next payday are enough to start. Future wages are not added to today’s spending money. When your actual pay arrives, update your balance and calculate again.

What if I am paid monthly?

Choose monthly pay and enter the next payday. Essentials are allowed for across the actual days remaining. A weekly guide is based on those days rather than dividing a monthly salary by four.

Why is money reserved for later bills?

A bill due after your next payday may still need money from this pay period. For later bills, the calculator divides the unfunded upcoming payment across the future paydays remaining. This is separate from bills due through the next payday.

What should I do if payday is today?

Include wages already received in your current balance, then use the following payday for this plan. If today’s pay has not arrived, do not count it as money available yet.

Are my calculator entries saved?

No. These entries stay in this page’s memory and refreshing clears them. They do not overwrite any saved CashCalm plan. Create an account separately if you want to keep a plan.
