How to build a weekly budget

A weekly budget works best when it starts with your next payday and the payments in between. A calendar month is longer than four weeks, so a flat monthly-income-divided-by-four shortcut can give you too much to spend.

Give your money three jobs

Separate money for scheduled payments, everyday essentials and flexible spending. Rent and council tax belong in scheduled payments. Groceries and travel can have a weekly allowance. Flexible spending is what remains after those commitments and any money you reserve.

Choose one place for each cost. For example, if £60 of groceries is in your weekly essentials, do not also enter it as a separate weekly bill.

Set a budget for the days you actually have

Count the days from today to the next payday. Subtract bills, essentials, later-bill reservations and your buffer from the current balance. Divide the remainder by the days left for a daily guide.

For a full weekly guide, multiply the daily amount by seven. If payday is fewer than seven days away, limit the guide to the remaining days. Do not assume another full week of money is available.

Example: two weeks to payday

With a £1,500 balance, £600 of bills and £70 a week for essentials, you have £760 left across 14 days if no other reservations apply. That is £380 per week or £54.28 a day, rounded down.

These guides split the same £760. They are not separate allowances to add together. Spending £100 today means updating the balance before checking what remains.

Make a short weekly check-in

Check your current balance, payment dates and any changed amounts. Mark paid occurrences in the app and update your balance after those payments have left. When pay arrives, include it in the balance and confirm your next payday.

Weekly, fortnightly and monthly pay can all support a weekly budget. Changing wages are handled by using actual money received rather than assuming every payday will match the last one.

Keep your plan current

The estimate depends on what you enter. Review changed bill amounts and refresh your balance after purchases and payments.
